Denver is set to host one of the most electrifying events in the world of breakdancing as the “World’s Largest” breakdancing competition heads to the Mile High City. With the sport gaining international attention following its debut at the Paris Olympics, this event promises to showcase some of the best talent in the country.
Red Bull BC One, the premier global breakdancing competition, has announced that the West Regional Cypher will return to Denver. This event will bring together top “breakers” – the elite breakdancers – who will judge and compete in a high-stakes battle to determine who will advance to the national and eventually global stages.
“The Denver break scene has been around and thriving for decades, so it’s exciting for the city to hold the West Cypher of Red Bull BC One,” said Ian Flaws, owner and founder of Denver’s Bboy Factory, in a press release. “For those who want to rise in the scene and continue to put Denver on the map, Red Bull BC One is the platform to showcase your craft.”
The competition will kick off with a preliminary tryout on Thursday, Sept. 19, at Wings Over the Rockies Exploration of Flight, where anyone can register to compete. The top three boys and girls from this round will earn a spot in the main event.
The main event, open to all ages, takes place on Friday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m. at Temple Nightclub. Here, 16 boys and 16 girls will go head-to-head in a knockout bracket, battling for the chance to represent the western region in the national competition in Los Angeles. Tickets for the main event are priced at just $11.55.
Winners from Denver’s competition will face off against champions from other regional City Cyphers, including Minneapolis and Detroit. The ultimate goal? A spot at the U.S. National Final in Los Angeles at the end of September. From there, the best breakers will advance to the World Final in Rio de Janeiro this December, where the world’s top breakdancers will compete for the ultimate title.
Since its inclusion in the Olympics, breakdancing has seen a surge in popularity, with performances going viral across the internet. Whether praised or critiqued, the sport is gaining momentum, and now Denver has the chance not only to witness it up close but also to be a part of the action. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to see, and even join, the world’s greatest breakers as they compete on the road to global glory.
