Colorado Ranks Among the Least Happy States in the U.S.

In a surprising turn, Colorado has ranked as one of the least happy states in the U.S., according to a recent study by WalletHub. Despite the state’s scenic beauty, outdoor activities, and emphasis on mental health, it currently sits at 45th out of 51 states (including Washington D.C.) for adult mental health.

Interestingly, Coloradans seem to prioritize mental health awareness more than many other states. A study from Axios revealed that 59% of Coloradans view mental health as an “extremely or very serious” issue. However, this concern doesn’t seem to reflect in the state’s happiness levels.

Teen Mental Health Sees a Positive Shift

While the overall rankings paint a challenging picture for adults, there is a silver lining—teen mental health in Colorado has seen significant improvement over the past year, providing some optimism for the future.

Colorado’s Rankings on Happiness Metrics

WalletHub’s study looked at three key factors to determine each state’s happiness: emotional and physical well-being, work environment, and community/environment. Colorado ranked:

  • 26th in work environment: The state’s job market and professional atmosphere are relatively stable, landing us in the middle of the pack.
  • 29th in emotional and physical well-being: Slightly below average, showing that Coloradans still struggle with mental and physical health.
  • 48th in community and environment: This category, unfortunately, drags down Colorado’s overall score, highlighting challenges in community ties and environmental factors affecting daily life.

In total, Colorado scored 46.29, placing it as the 15th least happy state in the country. While the numbers suggest there’s room for improvement, the growing awareness and focus on mental health in the state might pave the way for a more positive future.
