An early morning crash in Denver’s Athmar Park neighborhood on Friday led to significant damage and a major emergency response after a driver crashed into a building, causing a gas line rupture. Authorities later revealed that the driver had suffered a gunshot wound prior to the crash.
Incident Details
At 12:04 a.m., the Denver Fire Department responded to reports of a building collapse near West Virginia Avenue and Federal Boulevard. Upon arrival, crews discovered that a vehicle had crashed into a Mexican restaurant located in a strip mall, causing extensive structural damage and a gas leak.
The driver, who was critically injured, was immediately transported to a local hospital. Hours later, Denver Police shared that the gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted.
Emergency Response
The crash and subsequent gas leak prompted a swift response from emergency crews. Xcel Energy was called to the scene to address the broken gas line, and the gas was successfully shut off shortly after their arrival. Denver Fire crews then worked to stabilize the damaged building to prevent further collapse.
The incident also led to the temporary closure of the northbound lanes of South Federal Boulevard for several hours, causing disruptions to early morning traffic. The road has since reopened.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and the gunshot wound. The identity of the driver and additional details have not been released.
This incident serves as a reminder of the complex and interconnected nature of emergency responses, as first responders worked diligently to secure the scene and ensure public safety. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
