A burglary suspect in Castle Rock was arrested early Thursday morning after calling 911 to inquire about his truck, which had been impounded as evidence. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a burglary at a home under construction on Backdrop Street just before midnight Wednesday. Witnesses had seen a man taking lumber from the site, and when they confronted him, he retreated back into the house.
Deputies launched a search using a drone and a K-9 unit, but they couldn’t locate the suspect. However, they discovered his truck parked in front of the home and towed it away after taking an inventory of its contents. Hours later, around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, the suspect called 911, asking dispatchers about his truck. “We can’t make this stuff up,” the sheriff’s office joked in a post on X.
The suspect, who provided his location, was promptly arrested without further incident. He now faces charges of burglary, theft, trespassing, and possession of drugs.
