Colorado’s Rising Cost of Living: A Stark Reality
Living in Colorado has become increasingly expensive, with the cost of living soaring to new heights. The average rent in Colorado is now one of the highest in the nation, standing at $1,594, placing it fifth in the country. This steep increase in rent is felt acutely by residents, particularly in cities like Fort Collins.
Aurora’s Plummeting Rent Ranking
Despite the high cost of living, last year saw three Colorado cities ranked among the best places to rent in the country. However, the current reality starkly contrasts that ranking. Aurora, Colorado, has now been named one of the worst places to rent in the United States.
According to WalletHub’s recent rankings, Aurora falls significantly behind, coming in at 157th out of 182 cities. The rankings are based on two key categories: rental market & affordability, and quality of life. Aurora ranked 101st in rental market & affordability and a dismal 161st in quality of life, culminating in a total score of 37.87.
Denver and Colorado Springs Rankings
Denver fared slightly better but still ranks low at 97th overall. It placed 52nd for rental market & affordability but dropped to 121st for quality of life, resulting in a total score of 44.64. On the brighter side, Colorado Springs emerged as the best-performing Colorado city in these rankings, landing at 72nd place with a total score of 47.00. It ranked 64th in rental market & affordability and 93rd in quality of life.
National Context: Best and Worst Cities to Rent
Nationally, the best city for renting is Bismarck, North Dakota. Bismarck ranks first in rental market & affordability but drops to 96th in quality of life, earning a total score of 64.51. Conversely, the worst city to rent is Memphis, Tennessee, which ranks 168th in rental market & affordability and last in quality of life, with a total score of 26.22.
Colorado’s soaring rent prices and varying city rankings underscore the state’s complex rental landscape, presenting both challenges and opportunities for residents.
