Barnes and Noble to Acquire Tattered Cover for Nearly $2M
After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023, the beloved local bookstore chain, Tattered Cover, is being acquired by the largest retail bookseller in the U.S., Barnes & Noble.
Established in 1971, Tattered Cover operated six bookstores in the Denver area, one in Colorado Springs, and additional shops at the Denver airport. However, in 2023, Bended Page, LLC, the owner and operator of Tattered Cover, reported debts amounting to nearly $3.4 million in unsecured claims. Facing financial challenges, the local chain began exploring buyout options in March.
Court documents filed on Monday revealed that Tattered Cover has found a buyer. According to these documents, obtained by FOX31, an affiliate of Barnes & Noble Inc. will purchase Tattered Cover for $1,833,402 in cash, effectively ending its tenure as an independent bookstore.
Despite the acquisition, the Tattered Cover name will remain. Barnes & Noble plans to continue operating under the iconic brand name, preserving a part of Denver’s literary heritage. Currently, Tattered Cover has four locations open: Colfax Avenue, Aspen Grove, Union Station, and the Stanley Marketplace
