In a recent report by Redfin, a well-known real estate brokerage, Denver made the list of top 10 cities in the U.S. with the highest population declines in the first quarter of 2023. Between January to March 2023, Denver lost 4,200 residents, with San Francisco topping the list with 31,100 residents lost. Other metropolitan areas, such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., also declined, losing 18,000 to 23,400 people.
Apart from Denver, Colorado is also on the list of states with many people leaving. According to the report, the number of people searching to leave Colorado is 3,000 more than those searching to enter. The report also reveals that 44,000 people are searching to leave California compared to those searching to enter it. Meanwhile, New York has 25,000 people searching to go, Washington, D.C. has 12,000, and Massachusetts and Illinois have 10,000 and 9,000 people, respectively. In general, residents are going West Coast, Mid-Atlantic, and Great Plains states, with more people relocating to the southern, southwestern, New England, and mountain states.
On the flip side, Florida is among the states with the highest net population gain, with 43,000 more people searching to enter than leave. Texas, Arizona, Tennessee, and South Carolina follow closely behind.
