Girl Scouts Seek New Cookie Sales Locations Amid King Soopers Strike
The upcoming King Soopers union strike isn’t just affecting employees and shoppers—it’s also disrupting Girl Scout cookie sales across Colorado.
Cookie Sales Impacted by Storefront Closures
Each year, thousands of Girl Scouts set up booths outside King Soopers locations to sell their iconic cookies, with Super Bowl weekend being one of their biggest sales periods.
Leanna Clark, CEO of Girl Scouts of Colorado, said that 470 troops raised more than $2 million last year, handling everything from sales to marketing.
“We realize the strike is bigger than Girl Scout cookies, but it has a significant impact on our girls,” Clark said.
From Feb. 6 to Feb. 20, Girl Scout cookie booths will not be set up at King Soopers locations involved in the strike, forcing troops to find new sales spots.
Troops Look for Alternative Sales Locations
With more than 2,500 Colorado Scouts relying on cookie sales for funding, troops are actively seeking new locations at businesses with high foot traffic, including Safeway and ARC stores.
“I spoke with a troop raising money for a service project to help refugee children. That’s the kind of impact we’re talking about,” Clark explained.
Businesses interested in hosting a Girl Scout cookie booth can contact GSCO customer care at 877-404-5708.
Online Sales and Virtual Booth Map Available
Customers can also purchase cookies online, where a virtual cookie booth map will display up-to-date locations for in-person sales.
A Learning Experience for Young Entrepreneurs
Despite the challenges, Clark believes this situation presents an opportunity for Scouts to learn about real-world business obstacles.
“Selling cookies is like running a small business. A strike is a real challenge businesses face, so we’re using this as a learning moment—teaching them what strikes are, why they happen, and how to adapt,” she said.
While some King Soopers locations in Brighton, Castle Rock, Erie, Firestone, Fort Collins, Greeley, Longmont, and Loveland won’t be affected by the strike, Colorado’s Girl Scouts are determined to find new ways to keep their cookie sales strong.
