We are in the middle of a heatwave in most of the United States. The temperatures in Denver alone, have been in the upper 90s. I have been working the Rockies games at Coors field and the recent concerts that have played there. The amount of people being taken out by paramedics is crazy. It’s the heat exhaustion. It is a very real thing.
Just yesterday I got heat exhaustion working the game in the hot sun. There was literally no cloud coverage and no escape from the sun. It was a day game and I watched so many people coming into the stadium completely unprepared for the heat they would face.
It’s Colorado people. We are a mile closer to that big, fiery sun. So here are some pointers to warding off heat exhaustion.
Water. Water. Water.
Drink it. So much of it. If you are drinking alcohol, match every beer or alcoholic drink with a glass of water. It is so easy to get overheated and dehydrated right now.
Sunscreen.
Reapply often. And don’t bring that spray sunscreen, because you can’t bring it in the stadium to reapply. So lotion based sunscreen is the way to go.
Hats.
Wear them. The freckles and sunspots will catch up to you eventually in the mile high if you don’t. You’ll be taking frequent trips to the dermatologist and begging your facialist for a lightening treatment. I speak from experience.
Sunglasses.
Heck, here in Colorado we need sunglasses even in the winter. Keep a pair in your car, and one on you at all times. Us Coloradans know the pain of not being able to see the road while driving at peak sunshine times.
And lastly, for the love of summer. If you have kids; please do the same for them. I can’t tell you how many people come through the gates completely unprepared for the heat. If we are prepared to melt in the sun, we will all enjoy the games so much more. Right?
I wish you all relief from the heat and a beautiful August. Go Rockies!
