‘Bakery Bandit’ Wanted in Series of Sweet-Toothed Thefts
It might just be the ultimate case of an irresistible “sweet tooth.”
Around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, employees at Button Rock Bakery in Lafayette witnessed one of the most unusual burglaries ever. A thief broke into the bakery and left with just one item: a tray of cupcakes valued between $40 and $60. The entire incident was captured on the bakery’s security cameras.
Alana Wroblewski, a longtime baker approaching her third anniversary at Button Rock, was stunned when she saw the footage. “I’ve been in this industry for 15 years,” she said. “I’ve made and seen a lot of unique designs, but I never expected to see someone break in just for cupcakes.”
The team was both puzzled and amused by the incident. “When we found out that nothing else was taken except the cupcakes, we were all just cracking up,” Wroblewski added. “We know they’re good, but we didn’t realize they were that good!”
The burglary, now dubbed the work of the “Bakery Bandit,” alerted Wroblewski early Wednesday with multiple notifications on her phone. The footage revealed the burglar breaking the bakery’s front door with a blunt object before wandering around inside.
“He seemed indecisive at first,” Wroblewski explained, “but then he zeroed in on the cupcakes and just had to have them.”
The thief’s ultimate prize? A tray of carrot cake cupcakes.
“If he’s going to go through all that, I’d love a five-star review for those cupcakes because, clearly, they were worth it,” joked Wroblewski.
