King Soopers employees are preparing to vote on a potential strike after contract negotiations failed. Around 10,000 workers could be on the picket line, as the previous contract expired on January 17, 2025. The union, UFCW Local 7, has scheduled a vote on strike authorization, with results expected as early as Monday.
Negotiations began in October but have stalled after 13 meetings. King Soopers presented its final offer, which includes wage increases and a strong benefits package. However, union leaders called the offer “disrespectful,” claiming the company can afford better pay and improvements in safety.
The company’s offer is valid until January 31, with King Soopers president Joe Kelley stating that if workers reject it, further discussions will follow. However, union members may vote to strike before the deadline. A strike could lead to hardships for workers and disruptions for consumers, including empty shelves and reduced service, according to experts.
Kelley emphasized that despite a possible strike, the company is prepared to minimize disruptions and keep stores open, while assuring customers that the cost of increased wages will not be passed on to them.
