The city of Littleton, Colorado, is planning to redevelop the site of a low-cost senior housing complex near downtown. The current complex, called Geneva Village, is in need of extensive repairs and is at risk of asbestos contamination.
“I love Geneva Village. I really do,” resident Robyn Bernstein told Denver7. “I love the trees, the birds, the wildlife, the gateway to the city. I think it’s just beautiful.”
The city council is considering two options for the redevelopment: either close the complex and build new affordable housing units on the site, or renovate the existing buildings. The city council has not yet made a decision about which option to pursue. However, they are expected to make a decision in the coming months.
If the city council decides to close Geneva Village, the residents will be displaced. The city is working with the residents to find new housing options. However, many of the residents are low-income and may have difficulty finding affordable housing elsewhere.
“Ultimately, the council voted 6-1 to redevelop the site, with several council members saying it was the financially responsible option for the city,” reports Denver7.
The city council is expected to hold a public hearing on the redevelopment plan in the coming weeks. The public hearing will be an opportunity for residents to share their opinions on the plan and ask questions.
