Now that you watched the Single Dad’s guide to chores, let’s get a female perspective.
Single Mom’s guide for making chores more fun for kids
As a divorced mom of three, I find enforcing chores with my kids difficult. Why you may ask? Because I share custody of them and due to that divided time, I hate being the bad guy. I really do. It is something I really struggle with. Because of this, I have found something that works for me getting my kids to help me clean the house, where I can make it fun, and I don’t have to be the bad guy! Read on to learn my method.
Saturday morning, instead of cartoons and cereal like I used to wake up to in the 90s. Yes I know, it’s the 1900s as my kids would say! We wake up, grab a bowl of cereal and compile a list of chores by room. When finished we put the bowls in the sink and got together and set the timer. Here we go…
1. Put on your best cleaning outfits.
I really do this up with hair on top of my head and really cute leg warmers, think 80s style!
2. Turn that cleaning music up loud.
This will get you really in the mood to scrub, rinse, mop, sing, be silly, and have fun!
3. Once a chore is done, initial and cross it off the list.
Some good old-fashioned competition will naturally ensue here. It’ll be fierce, at least in my family and hopefully fun. But definitely, it’ll get clean!
4. After the house is clean, a celebratory event is chosen.
That day or evening we choose something together. That could be movie night and pizza. Bowling or shopping. So many things to choose from, the hard part is deciding together as a family. You know how the votes go.
5. Last but not least, you get to wake up Sunday morning to a clean house.
Sunday morning, you can sleep in, if you have older children and actually get to. You’ll have a clean kitchen to make that Sunday morning pancake breakfast with fresh blueberries and white chocolate chips, my kid’s favorites, and that much-deserved cup of freshly brewed coffee. The day is your oyster. You can snuggle in or choose to explore. The choice is yours. At least you already have a clean house. For today.
