Suspected Thief Makes a Getaway on E-Scooter in Denver
In a new twist on getaway methods, a suspected thief in Wheat Ridge used an electric scooter to flee the scene of a crime. On August 25, the Wheat Ridge Police Department responded to a theft at a beauty store off Youngfield Street. According to the 911 caller, the suspect made off with three reusable bags filled with merchandise—but instead of hopping into a getaway car, he sped away on an e-scooter.
Police searched the area and soon spotted a man on an e-scooter matching the suspect’s description near West 32nd Avenue and Ward Road. Officers activated their lights and sirens, but the suspect “kept on scootin’,” as the Wheat Ridge police humorously shared on X (formerly Twitter).
After a brief chase, during which the suspect abandoned the scooter, officers were able to catch him on foot. Upon searching him, police discovered 19 stolen perfume bottles valued at $2,595, along with suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
The man also had three active warrants—two from Lakewood for failure to appear and shoplifting, and one from Denver for shoplifting. He now faces multiple charges, including felony theft, unlawful possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstructing a peace officer.
Wheat Ridge police offered a firm message on the situation: “Stop stealing in Wheat Ridge.”
